Postal workers are voting today on whether to accept a tentative contract after more than two years of labour dispute with Canada Post.

The union, representing roughly 55,000 workers, began voting April 20 on a five-year deal that includes wage increases of 6.5 per cent in the first year and 3 per cent in the second. Both sides agreed to a strike moratorium during the vote, though workers are also casting ballots on whether to authorize a strike mandate if they reject the deal.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers' board endorsed the contract by about 60 per cent, citing job security as a win. But the union's president has asked members to reject it, arguing it rolls back rights and compensation. The two sides have clashed repeatedly over wages and structural changes to the service, with workers taking to the picket line multiple times during the bargaining process.

Canada Post's financial situation adds urgency: the postal service lost $205 million before taxes in the first quarter of 2026 as it pushes forward with reforms meant to stabilize the organization. The outcome of today's vote will signal whether workers see the deal as fair compensation for the changes the service is pursuing.
