Canada's spy agency and four allied intelligence services are warning that China's military intelligence operatives are using professional networking sites and job boards to target Canadian government and military personnel.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service, along with agencies from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, issued the alert Wednesday. They say Chinese intelligence officers or their affiliates pose as recruiters for private consultancies, think tanks, and human resources firms, posting fake job advertisements for foreign policy and defence analysts.

While applicants often have no direct access to classified information, those hired are then pressured to provide "non-public" information — including unclassified data on government policy, military strategy, capabilities, and installations.

CSIS emphasized that even small pieces of information can be valuable when combined with other intelligence. China ultimately seeks privileged military, political, and economic information that would give Beijing strategic and tactical advantage over the Five Eyes alliance.

The alert reflects growing concern about espionage tactics adapting to digital spaces. Canadian officials and military personnel using professional networks should be aware that job offers from unfamiliar firms may not be what they appear.
