Quebec launches new children's rights commissioner role

First report highlights gaps in provincial legislative framework

· 1 min read · HOC Newsroom

Quebec's new children's welfare and rights commissioner, Marie-Eve Brunet Kitchen, has released her inaugural report highlighting that children's rights remain incomplete and not fully explicitly recognized in the province. The commissioner's position was created following a key recommendation of the Laurent Commission, which was established in 2019 to examine children's rights and youth protection in the wake of a seven-year-old girl's death in Granby. Brunet Kitchen's report recommends that Quebec lawmakers adopt a formal charter of children's rights to strengthen protections.
