Friday's cold snap and a night out—pick your vibe
It's a proper chilly one, but tonight's live music and theatre are calling. Get out there.
It's dropped back to 6°C this morning—a real step down from what we've had lately—so layer up if you're heading anywhere early. Sun's out though, and the UV's sitting at 8 (high), so even in the cold you'll feel it if you're out long. The upside: you've got nearly 17 hours of daylight, and the sun doesn't set until 9:54 tonight, so there's plenty of time to soak it in. Check the foothills road cameras if you're heading that way, but nothing major is flagged for town today.
On the local beat: Flair Airlines pilots just ratified a three-year contract after ten months of back-and-forth, which is good news for folks flying out of YYC. Separately, the Stampede noise limits are causing some friction—festival operators are pushing back on stricter rules that could threaten summer jobs. And the Historical Society of Alberta caught a break: the province came through with three years of funding, which keeps a real piece of Cowtown's story on its feet.
If you're thinking dinner, there's momentum building on the food front. Vietnamese breakfast is landing on 17 Avenue this month, and Wingstop just opened its first Alberta spot at Deerfoot Meadows if you're in the mood. Come mid-month, Stacked Pancake opens down in Okotoks, and the Stampede's bringing live chef competitions this year too.
Now, the evening. You've got proper options. Sam Roberts Band is at Spruce Meadows at 7, Joe List is doing comedy at The Laugh Shop at the same time, The Listros are playing Commonwealth Bar at 7:30, and if you want something different, Come From Away is on at Theatre Calgary (Max Bell) at 7:30. Pick your mood and go—live rock, comedy, or Broadway; all of it sounds right on a Friday night. The cold won't bother you once you're inside and moving.
Wrap the week up warm.
