Monday rain, Deerfoot chaos, and a week that's just getting started

It's 8°C and drizzly out there, so grab a jacket that doesn't make you look like you're heading to the gym. The rain's light enough that it won't wreck your day, but it'll stick around, so plan indoor coffee runs and maybe a lunch spot that doesn't require a long walk. You've got until 9:55 PM tonight if you're thinking evening plans — that's nearly 16 and a half hours of daylight, which is peak summer hours, so at least you've got that going. UV's sitting at 5, which is moderate, but the rain's doing most of the work for you anyway.

On the commute front: there's been a police shooting on the Deerfoot that's closed sections of the highway after reports of a dangerous driver. Check current conditions before you head that way — it might be clearing by now, but if you're heading south or north through downtown, give yourself a little extra buffer or find another route. If you're heading to the foothills, keep an eye on road conditions up that way too.

A couple things worth knowing about town this morning. There's real concern about how Alberta's opioid situation is tracking — EMS calls are spiking and we're not keeping pace with the national decline, which is worth paying attention to. On a lighter note, some Calgary beekeepers are working to get local queen bees into the picture instead of importing them, which is a genuinely cool move for the whole industry.

There's also been a serious motorcycle crash in West Springs — a man in his 20s died after his bike hit a house. That's the kind of thing that hits different when it's your neighbourhood.

If you're thinking about lunch, keep your eyes open for The Shaft if you haven't tried it yet — it's a Calgary coffee cocktail that's been doing pretty well across Western Canada. And if you're into pancakes, Stacked Pancake opens June 24 down in Okotoks, so that's on the radar for this week.

Tonight's the only real draw if you're looking to get out: John Butler Trio's playing. If live music sounds good to you after a Monday, grab it. Otherwise, it's a quiet weeknight — the kind where you settle in, order takeout, and don't feel bad about an early night. Come From Away hits the Palace Theatre on Wednesday if you want to look ahead.

Stay dry out there, and take it easy on the Deerfoot if you're heading that way.
