Stampede's in full swing — here's your Saturday sorted
Rodeo opens today, smoke's still hanging around, and tonight's packed with live music across town.
Morning — it's 13°C and mostly cloudy out there, so you've got decent light for most of the day (sunset's not till 9:53 tonight, so you've got serious daylight to work with). UV's sitting at 7, which is high, so sunscreen's still your friend even under the cloud cover. One thing to keep front of mind: that wildfire smoke's still lingering over the city, so if you're heading outside for anything long, air quality's worth checking before you commit.
Road-wise, nothing's jumping out as a major disruption today, but if you're heading toward the foothills for anything, grab a quick look at conditions before you go.
Stampede's properly underway now — the rodeo's kicking off at 1:30 at GMC Stadium with 210 competitors, and there's some good stories in the lineup this year. A father and son are both competing, picking up a rodeo legacy that's a century in the making. Bull rider Jordan Hansen's also back chasing his second Calgary Stampede crown, so if you're into that side of things, today's the day to catch it.
If you're thinking about food, there's some solid options beyond the usual midway fare — premium dining and chef showcases are part of the Stampede lineup this year. If you're looking closer to home, Revelwoods Tavern & Terrace just opened in the southeast with Southern comfort food and cocktails, or there's a new Parisian-style café downtown if you're after fresh pastries. And if you're heading through the usual chains, McDonald's and Skip are running BOGO deals during festival season, which is worth knowing if you're just grabbing something quick.
Tonight's where it gets busy. If you're a live music person, you've got options all over — Nashville North's firing up at the Stampede at 5 PM, there's the Badlands Music Festival with Griz at 6, and Cowboys Music Festival (18+) also goes at 6. If you want something lower-key, Tetrad Sound's running free Summer Sessions at Commonwealth Bar at 7 — RSVP's open.
With the clouds and the smoke, indoor's probably the safer bet tonight anyway, especially if you're planning to be out late. The city's got the energy though — Stampede always does.
Have a solid day out there.
