Friday's here — live music, hockey, and a long weekend waiting

It's Friday morning and you've got about eleven hours of daylight to work with before sunset hits 6:57 PM — good to know if you're planning anything outside. We're sitting at 6°C and mostly cloudy, so layer up but nothing dramatic. There's a Special Weather Statement in effect, so check the details if you're heading into the foothills later.

Road-wise, keep an eye on foothills conditions if that's your route today — camera feeds are your friend if you're heading west.

On the bigger-picture stuff happening around town: KPMG just relocated over 800 people into a downtown tower, which is a real vote of confidence in the core after a rough stretch. Meanwhile, the province is telling the city to hold steady on its housing zoning approach — so that conversation keeps going. SAIT also announced a $150-million autonomous aviation facility getting a hefty $30-million gift from philanthropist David Bissett, which is worth noting for anyone watching what's being built next.

Food-wise, there's some movement. Craft Beer Market opened a new spot out in Shepard Flats with a chef-driven menu if you're after something solid. Tipsie just opened in that iconic Kensington wine bar space with small plates, so if you've been wondering what was happening there, now you know. Heads up though — four places are closing: Yellow Door Bistro, Weaselhead, Koko, and Ricardo's Hideaway. And if you've been to Kinjo Mahogany recently (specifically around September 18), check the news — there were four confirmed E. coli cases tied to a meal there.

Tonight's where the fun starts. The Wranglers are home at the Saddledome at 7:00 PM against Bakersfield — solid Friday night if hockey's your thing. If you're more into live music, Honest Heart Collective's playing at Modern Love at 5:00 PM with guests yet to be announced, which could go anywhere. Over at Commonwealth Bar & Stage, DJ Jimi's spinning at 7:00 PM. And if stand-up's calling, Jason Cheny's at The Laugh Shop at 6:45 PM.

It's indoor-night weather, so no excuses to stay home — but plenty of reasons not to. Pick your poison: rock, comedy, hockey, or just a dive into one of the new breweries. Long weekend's right there waiting.

Stay warm out there.
