Snow on the way, so get your wheels and your plans sorted early

Morning, Calgary. It's 0°C out there but it feels closer to -5, and the light snow has already settled in, so the coat that's been hanging by the door is finally earning its keep. Sunset comes at 6:18 tonight, which gives you a good ten hours of daylight to get through the day before the dark rolls in early. If you've got errands or a walk on the plan, do them in the earlier part of the afternoon while the roads are still behaving.

On the roads, the foothills are where to keep your eyes open. The road report has conditions and cameras posted for that stretch, so it's worth a quick look before you head out if your route takes you that way. And if you're one of the folks who gets on Glenmore from Deerfoot every morning, I feel for you today. Give yourself extra time, leave a little more room than you think you need, and maybe let the first few minutes of the drive be a little slower than usual.

Around town, the story getting the most talk is the water rates. Higher fees are on the way for Calgarians, and the chamber's executive has called the increases "egregious" for local businesses, so expect that to be a conversation at a lot of kitchen tables and shop counters this week. Also worth knowing: oil is trading near $100 a barrel, but Canadian crude is still selling at a steeper discount, which is a fact that never stops mattering around here. On a lighter note, Heritage Park has unveiled its restored Selkirk steam locomotive after a two-and-a-half-month rebuild, and if you've ever wanted to see a train up close without leaving the city, that's a good excuse to head over. And you may want to hear this one: three students were hurt after bear spray was deployed at a Calgary high school, so if you have kids in that world, it's worth a conversation at dinner.

For lunch or a bite after work, the ramen scene is in full swing this fall, with six spots worth a detour, and Rain Dog Bar in Inglewood is a solid pick if you want rotating menus paired with one of the best craft beer lists in the city. Later in the week, the YYC Noodle Festival kicks off November 5 and runs through the 15th, so it's a good one to circle if you're a noodle person.

Tonight you've got two live options: Free Throw at The Palace Theatre, with a 6:30 start and then a second set with Carly Cosgrove at 7:30, or the Buena Vista Orchestra at Bella Concert Hall on the Mount Royal University campus at 8:30. Pick your vibe, rock at The Palace or orchestral at Bella, and either way, get there before the snow piles up on the roads.

Looking ahead, the weekend has a lot going on. DJ Shadow is marking 30 years of his album on Friday, Alberta Ballet's Peer Gynt runs Friday through Sunday, and there's hockey and comedy on the calendar too. Stay warm out there, Calgary.
