Cold Thursday in Cowtown — dress warm and mind the foothills roads
Minus four and cloudy, with a few things worth knowing before you head out, and a choice of evening plans.
Morning, Calgary. It's a bit of a bite out there this Thursday, with -4°C on the thermometer and a windchill that makes it feel closer to -5. Mostly cloudy skies, so no sun to take the edge off, and the UV is barely a factor at 1.0. Bundle up properly, especially if you're waiting at a bus stop or walking the Plus 15 is the easy way to stay out of it. The sun goes down at 6:16 tonight, so if you're planning anything after work, you're living in darkness for most of the evening. Plan your evening accordingly.
If you're heading west toward the foothills, check the road conditions and cameras before you leave. It's the kind of morning where a few extra minutes on the road can save you a headache, and the cameras will show you what's really happening before you commit to the drive.
There's a bit of news worth knowing, too. Calgary's water restrictions are coming back on November 4, as the Bearspaw South feeder main nears completion. If you're a lawn-and-garden person, mark that on the calendar now. In the southeast, police are asking anyone with information to come forward after a man was critically hurt in an assault. Two people have been charged after human remains were found at a home in Skyview Ranch. And down in Edmonton's shadow, Alberta is pushing ahead with its own dental and drug plans, even after voters rejected the federal opt-out referendum. The Bisons are chasing league-leading form in a split weekend that runs right through Halloween, so keep an eye on the scores.
For lunch, if you're in Inglewood, Rain Dog Bar pairs a rotating menu with one of the best craft beer lists in the city, and it's a good spot to duck into when it's this cold outside. Marda Loop's Zipbab is serving up Korean home cooking that will fix whatever the weather is doing to you. And if you've been meaning to try ramen this fall, there are six Calgary spots worth the detour.
Tonight, you have options. DJ Shadow is at The Palace Theatre at 7:00, celebrating 30 years of Endtroducing, which is a real milestone for anyone who grew up with that record. The Alberta Ballet is performing Peer Gynt at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium at 7:30. Microwave, Free Throw and Carly Cosgrove play Pawn Shop Live, formerly Union Hall, also at 7:30. Or you can head to the Saddledome, where the Calgary Wranglers take on the Laval Rocket at 7:00. Whatever you choose, you'll be going indoors tonight, which is a good thing given the temperature.
Stay warm, Calgary. Get some good sleep, and we'll talk tomorrow.
