Halloween Saturday in Calgary: Bundle Up, Then Go Out
It's cold and grey at -1, but the ballet, the Wranglers, and the Halloween bars are all lined up for the night.
Morning, Calgary. It's -1 out there, feeling more like -7 with the wind, and the sky is solid cloud, so this is a bundle-up kind of Saturday. Dress in layers and keep a hat in your pocket, especially if you're heading out to the foothills. UV is barely a factor today, so you won't need the sunscreen, but the cold will find any gap in your scarf.
The sun goes down at 6:12 tonight, so if you're planning an evening out, keep that in mind. You'll have roughly nine and a three-quarter hours of daylight to work with, which is plenty for a relaxed afternoon before the lights come on.
There's a road report out for the foothills, so check the conditions and cameras before you head west toward the mountains. If you're just getting around town, nothing else is flagged this morning.
For something to do before dark, the Calgary Wranglers take on the Laval Rocket at the Saddledome at noon, and the Alberta Ballet's Peer Gynt is at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium at 2:00 PM. A Pirate's Life is at Jack Singer Concert Hall at the same time, if you're in the mood for something lighter and more family-friendly.
On the sports front, the Flames beat the Kraken 6-2 last night, and Coronato had a career-high four points, so if you're a Flames fan, you already have something to smile about. Closer to home, Calgary police are keeping Crime Stoppers running even after the Navigate360 data breach, and Alberta is set to freeze the education property tax rate for three years starting in 2027. Sentencing came down this week in a painful case, a Calgary father getting ten years for abusing his young son, and the community's reaction to that is worth keeping in mind. On a brighter note, officials broke ground on Ke Mama Nnanik, which will bring 24 affordable homes to the southeast.
For food, Rain Dog Bar in Inglewood pairs rotating menus with one of the best craft beer lists in town, which makes it a good pick for a cold night. If you're craving ramen, there are six spots worth a detour this fall. And if you're after a fancier evening, Orso in Jasper and Memories in Regina both made Canada's 17 best fine dining list, though those are a road trip away.
Tonight is the big one. Monster Ball kicks off the Halloween pregame at Commonwealth Bar at 5:00 PM, Toque is at Deerfoot Inn and Casino at 9:00 PM, and Modern Love is throwing a Halloween party at 9:00 PM too. If you want a night of theatre, the Alberta Ballet is back at the Jubilee at 7:30 PM. Dress warm for the walk between venues, because it's going to be cold.
Have a good Halloween Saturday, Calgary. Stay warm out there, and watch the roads on the way to the mountains.
