Sunday in Calgary: Cold Clear Skies, Hockey, and a Full Night Out

Morning, Calgary. It's a bright, clear Sunday and it's cold, sitting at -2 with a feels-like of -3, so the toque and the good mitts are non-negotiable if you're heading out for a walk along the Bow or a slow brunch on foot. The sky is mainly clear and the UV is low at 1, so you won't need the sunscreen fuss today, but the sun sets early at 6:10 PM, which gives you just under ten hours of daylight to get your errands and your fun sorted. Plan your outdoor stuff for the middle of the day and save the evening for somewhere with a roof and a heater.

On the roads, there's no major disruption to flag this morning for getting around town, so Sunday driving should be easy. If you're heading out toward the south end, keep an eye on the Saddle Ridge area, where police have been searching the southernmost pond in Saddlecreek after reports of suspicious activity, so you may run into some activity there.

In the news, the Flames had a rough one in Denver, falling 5-2 to the Colorado Avalanche and sitting at 6-8-0 after their opening month. Their game against Seattle went the other way, though, with the Flames beating the Kraken 6-2 as Coronato posted a career-high four points, which is worth knowing if you're a hockey person. On the civic side, Elections Alberta is recommending the 2027 vote be delayed as gerrymandering accusations fly, so that one's going to be a conversation around the coffee shops for a while. It's a heavy story, too, with a Calgary father sentenced to 10 years for abusing his young son, and I'll leave it there.

For a meal out, Rain Dog Bar in Inglewood pairs rotating menus with one of the best craft beer lists in the city, which makes it a good spot for a relaxed Sunday dinner. If you're after something different, the six Calgary ramen spots worth a detour this fall are a good place to start a bowl-crawl on a cold day, and if you want a sweet treat afterward, the Krispy Kreme Hot Light is back at the Calgary Theatre Factory location.

Tonight is a full one. The Calgary Hitmen take on the Kamloops Blazers as part of Tim Hortons Minor Hockey Day, which is a fun bit of Sunday hockey, and if you'd rather laugh, Laura Ramoso is at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium at 7:00 PM. Gold City is at Bethany Chapel at the same time, and A Pirate's Life is at the Jack Singer Concert Hall at 8:00 PM if you want theatre. Since the sun is down by 6:10, all of these are indoor options, so you're covered for the cold.

Enjoy the day, Calgary, and dress warm. The sun's going down early, so make the most of the bright hours.
