Monday in Calgary: bundle up, keep the Flames on the radar
Minus four and clear, a grey-pavement Monday with a few good reasons to get out after dark.
Morning, neighbour. It's -4 out there, feeling closer to -7 with the wind, and the sky is clear, so the cold is the kind that bites the cheeks but leaves the day bright. Plan for a real hat and proper mitts for the walk to the bus or the scrape of the windshield. Sunset is 6:09 this evening, so you'll get about nine and a half hours of daylight, and you'll want to be home or dressed for the cold well before dark rolls in.
On the roads, I don't have any closures or disruptions to flag for your commute this morning, so give yourself the usual cushion and a little extra time for the cold to slow the car down.
The story people are talking about is a heartbreaking one: a two-year-old boy was struck and killed by a taxi in a northeast Calgary parking lot. It's a reminder to slow down and watch for little ones in busy lots, especially in the early darkness of November. Elsewhere, the Cavalry are carrying a 1-0 deficit into the second leg of a CPL semifinal after Supra struck first in the opening leg, so there's a game to keep an eye on this week. Western Wheel Cares also kicked off its 2026 holiday campaign, aimed at seven Foothills charities, which is a nice way to start thinking about the season. On the political side, Elections Alberta is recommending the 2027 vote be delayed while gerrymandering accusations fly, so that one's worth watching.
For lunch or dinner, Rain Dog Bar in Inglewood pairs rotating menus with one of the city's better craft beer lists, which is a solid warm-up on a cold night. If you're craving noodles, six Calgary ramen spots are worth a detour this fall. And if you're after something a bit more special, Canada's 17 best fine dining restaurants include Jasper's Orso and Regina's Memories, both worth the trip if you're already planning a getaway.
Tonight is clear and cold, so it's a good night to stay in or pick somewhere close and walkable. If you do head out, a warm spot with a good drink is the move. The Calgary Flames are on the road in Denver, having dropped a 5-2 decision to the Colorado Avalanche, and they sit at 6-8-0 after the opening month, so there's a bit of work to do.
Stay warm out there, and look after each other on the roads this week.
