Friday in Calgary: Breezy Start, Warm Afternoon, Big Night Ahead
A cold-but-clear Friday with a wind warning in play, a Flames game at the Dome, and plenty of music if you want to head out tonight.
Morning, neighbour. It's 5°C and mainly clear out there, which sounds mild until you step outside and find the wind has other plans. There's a wind warning in effect today, so anything loose on your balcony or patio needs to be tied down, and if you're biking or walking the Bow, give yourself extra time and keep a firm grip on the handlebars. UV is barely a factor at 1.0, so sunglasses are the main thing you need for the glare off the snow. The sun goes down at 6:02 this evening, so you've got about nine and a half hours of daylight to make the most of.
For getting around, the one to keep an eye on is the Foothills road report, which is showing conditions and cameras for the stretch out that way. If you're driving west or heading toward the mountains today, check the cameras before you leave and build in a few minutes of cushion. Anywhere else in town, it's a regular Friday commute, so the usual advice applies: leave a touch early and let the Deerfoot do what it does.
On the local news front, the mayor has called the federal Budget 2026 'laughable' for its lack of city-specific funding, which is the kind of headline that gets people talking at the coffee shop this morning. There's also a story out of the courts that's worth knowing about: a former National Bank employee and his mother have agreed to pay $330,000 to settle an Alberta insider trading case. Closer to home for a lot of folks, Calgary police are asking for the public's help finding 15-year-old Mary-Anne, so if you spot her or have any information, please reach out to police.
For dinner tonight, Rain Dog Bar in Inglewood is a solid pick, pairing a rotating menu with one of the best craft beer lists in the city. If you're after tacos, the Calgary's 11 best taco spots list is worth a look, with everything from braised beef to birria on the table. And if you're making a weekend trip south, Soul Sisters Café is holding its grand opening at Air Ranch Plaza in Okotoks on Saturday.
Tonight is a big one. The Calgary Flames take on the Anaheim Ducks at the Scotiabank Saddledome at 7:00 PM, so if you've got tickets, get downtown early and enjoy the buzz. If hockey isn't your thing, there's plenty else on: Allison Russell's In The Hour of Chaos Tour and a separate Allison Russell show with AHI, both at the Grey Eagle Event Centre at 7:30 PM, The Nightmare Before Christmas in Concert at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium at 7:30 PM, and Gorgon City at The Palace Theatre at 8:00 PM. Everything tonight is indoors, so the wind won't touch your plans once you're inside.
Have a great Friday, Calgary. Dress warm, mind the wind, and enjoy the start of the weekend.
