Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirms 12 Canadian activists intercepted by Israel are safe and being transferred out of the region.

Twelve Canadian activists detained aboard a flotilla intercepted by Israel while attempting to break the Gaza blockade are being deported to Turkey, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced Thursday.

The Global Sumud Flotilla—a coalition of hundreds of activists and 41 boats attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza—was stopped by Israeli forces. The Canadian participants were among those detained. Anand said they are safe and the transfer to Turkey is underway.

Prime Minister Mark Carney described Israel's treatment of the flotilla members as "abominable," signaling strong diplomatic language from Ottawa. The flotilla's mission reflects ongoing international tensions around the Gaza conflict and the varied ways diaspora and activist communities are engaging with the humanitarian crisis.

For Toronto's Palestinian and pro-humanitarian-aid communities, the detention and deportation underscore the risks activists face when attempting to challenge blockades or assert solidarity across borders. The Canadian government's response suggests Ottawa will push back diplomatically, but the episode also highlights the complex legal and political terrain activists navigate when their actions conflict with state authority.
