Glider Pilot Killed in Crash Northeast of Edmonton
The Transportation Safety Board is investigating a fatal glider crash in Lamont County, northeast of Edmonton, that killed the solo pilot on Monday afternoon.
A pilot was killed in a glider crash near Edmonton on Monday afternoon, and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada is now investigating the accident.
RCMP responded to the crash in Lamont County, northeast of Edmonton, shortly after 3 p.m. One person was declared dead at the scene. The aircraft involved was a privately registered Schleicher ASW 20, a single-seat sailplane commonly used for recreational gliding.
Police are not releasing details about the pilot because next-of-kin had not yet been notified at the time of the initial report. The TSB has deployed a team to investigate the circumstances of the crash, including examining the aircraft, weather conditions, and any other factors that may have contributed.
Glider crashes are relatively rare given the small number of active pilots, but when they occur, they're often fatal because of the aircraft's lack of an engine and the pilot's dependence on thermal lift and careful energy management. The investigation will take weeks or months to complete.
