The highly anticipated opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge has been delayed as Canada and the United States take additional time to resolve outstanding issues, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority said Wednesday.

Invitations for a Friday ribbon-cutting ceremony on the $6.4-billion bridge connecting Windsor and Detroit have been postponed. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday the bridge would open by week's end, but changed course Wednesday, saying there is "no big drama" around the bridge but if it "takes a little longer it will take a little bit longer."

The delay comes after President Donald Trump said in February the U.S. would need compensation before allowing the bridge to open. Canada fully funded the bridge's construction, with costs to be recovered through tolls shared with Michigan once the project is paid down.

While no new opening date has been announced, the delay signals final negotiations over cost-sharing and operational terms are still underway between the two countries.
