Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Thursday, June 18 that Ottawa and B.C. will jointly fund a $200 million project to build a new secondary school and renovate the health care centre in Tumbler Ridge, a northeastern B.C. community still reeling from February's mass shooting.

The province and federal government will each contribute $100 million, with construction on the school expected to start later this summer. The new facility will replace Tumbler Ridge Secondary, which is being demolished after the shooting killed eight people, including five students aged 12 to 13 and a female educator. The shooter also killed her mother and 11-year-old brother before taking her own life.

In May, the province announced a new school would be built after school board officials determined that students did not want to return to the existing facility. Carney said he and Eby visited the community after the shooting and heard directly from students, parents, teachers, and first responders about what could help the community heal.

"We promised we would be there for the community as they rebuild," Carney said.
