Thursday heat, tennis all day, and the night's yours to pick

Morning, it's a proper August day. 21°C right now but it'll feel like 27° by midday, and that UV's sitting at 8—that's high, so if you're heading outside, sunscreen isn't optional. Partly cloudy all day, which means the sun's going to find you. Sunset's at 8:16, so you've got a solid 14.5 hours of daylight to work with.

If you're commuting across the island, there's réaménagement des voies happening today—lane reconfiguration work—so give yourself a bit extra time depending on where you're headed. There's also a structure inspection in play somewhere on the network, so check your specific route before you leave.

On the news side, the provincial election campaign officially launches at month's end with voting set for October 5, so the political noise is about to ramp up. Michel Leblanc, the former chamber of commerce guy, just got confirmed as the Quebec Liberal candidate in Marguerite-Bourgeoys. Also worth knowing: if you own a pool, Quebec's giving pool owners until September 2027 to upgrade for safety compliance—miss that deadline and you're looking at fines up to a grand a day, so that's something to plan for.

For lunch or dinner, La Soupière on Ste-Catherine West is bringing customizable Sichuan hot pot to the city if you're in the mood for something interactive and warming. If you want something more low-key, L'Express on Saint-Denis still does that whole Parisian bistro thing without the flight. Word of caution though: Costco Canada's recalling some Cadbury Oreo bars and Alfa Croissants over allergen and mould concerns, so check your fridge if you picked those up recently.

Tonight's got real options depending on your mood. The National Bank Open tennis tournament is running—sessions start at 11 AM and keep going through the evening at Rogers Court over at IGA Stadium, so if you want to catch some live tennis in this heat, that's happening all day and into the night. If you're more into music, there's a soul and funk night with Pamela King at Le Balcon X Terrasse starting at 6, or you can catch a Pink Floyd tribute doing Dark Side of the Moon at Le Dome at 5:30. Those indoor shows mean you'll catch a break from the heat, which honestly won't feel like a bad thing by 6 PM.

Get some water in you today, keep that sunscreen close, and enjoy the long light. See you out there.
