Thursday cold snap hits—watch the Honoré-Mercier, catch the metal tonight

It's dropped since yesterday—we're at 4°C this morning, so dress in layers and don't expect to shed much as the day goes. Clear skies mean you'll get good light until just after 6 p.m., so if you're planning an evening walk or something outside, you've got your window. UV's running at 4, which is moderate, so no worries there.

On the commute side: the left lane on the Honoré-Mercier Bridge is closed indefinitely now because of a crack in a steel beam. It's not going anywhere fast, so if that's part of your regular route, build in buffer time—you know how it gets when one lane disappears. Plan around it.

There's also a provincial earthquake preparedness drill happening this morning at 10:15 a.m. across Quebec. Don't be startled if your phone goes off or you feel a test alert come through. It's just practice, but good to know it's happening.

On the food front, a few recalls are in play: organic cheeses from a Quebec maker have listeria concerns, a Montreal-North bakery's all products are off shelves over wood contamination, and there's an E. coli warning on hummus from Marché Sultan on Rue Jarry. Nothing dramatic, just worth sidestepping. That said, restaurants across Canada have been raising prices through 2026—half of them are already planning more hikes next year. It's rough out there, so when you find a spot with good cake or pie at a fair price and real portion sizes, it's worth remembering.

Tonight's got options if you're looking to get out. There's metal if that's your thing—Cradle of Filth at Théâtre Beanfield with Moonspell, Worm, and Black Satellite, doors at 7 p.m. SPY is playing Newspeak at 7 as well if you want something smaller. Or if you're in the mood for something completely different, Mamma Mia! is at Place des Arts at 7:30 p.m. Take your pick.

The Young Bar of Montreal is also offering free legal advice to Quebec residents this Saturday and Sunday if you need to sort something out—worth knowing.

Stay warm out there. See you tonight.
