Sunday in the 514: Bundle Up, Catch a Show, Mind the Sunset

Bonjour-hi, and happy Sunday. It's 2°C and mainly clear out there, so the sun will be doing its job, but it won't be doing much for your fingers. Grab the warm toque and the good gloves before you head for the métro or the car. The UV is low at 2.0, so sunglasses are more for comfort than protection today. And mark your calendar now: the sun goes down at 4:42 PM, which gives you about ten hours of daylight to work with. If you're planning anything outdoors after that, you'll be doing it in the dark and the cold.

With the weather as it is, I'd keep most of your Sunday plans indoors once the afternoon rolls around. A lazy brunch in the Plateau or Mile End, then a show, sounds about right. If you're looking for a family-friendly or daytime outing, Michel Barrette is at Théâtre Manuvie at 3:00 PM, and the Orchestre Métropolitain is playing its Symphony of Life at the Maison Symphonique at Place des Arts at the same hour. Both are an easy afternoon out and a good excuse to stay warm in a room full of people.

For the evening, the city is busy. Mariachi Herencia De Mexico takes the stage at Place des Arts at 7:30 PM. Later on, CupcakKe is at Club Soda at 8:00 PM, Veronic Dicaire is at Théâtre St-Denis at the same hour, and Blue October plays MTELUS at 8:00 PM. That's a real range, whether you want mariachi, comedy, or a rock night. Once the show lets out, you'll want a plan for getting home in the cold, so think about the métro or a cab before you leave the venue.

If soccer's more your thing, FC Supra faces Cavalry FC at Stade Boréale, the former Complexe Multi-Sports de Laval, at 4:00 PM. It's a short drive north of the island, so give yourself some extra time to find parking and get settled before kickoff.

On the news side, Montrealers held a die-in at Health Canada's offices to protest pesticides, and Québec solidaire is calling on the SPVM to act after alleged evidence destruction in a domestic violence case. Premier Legault's counterpart, the Quebec premier, heads to the 20th Francophonie Summit in Phnom Penh from November 12 to 17.

Food safety news is worth a quick look before you shop this week. MAPAQ has warned people not to eat ready-to-eat products from Boucherie Blainville. Boulangerie Richard is recalling pâtés that have undeclared wheat and fish allergens across Quebec, which matters if you or someone at the table has allergies. A Montreal-North bakery has recalled all its products over possible wood contamination, and Néo Chips is pulling its freeze-dried fruit sticks for possible dried stem fragments. Check your pantry and fridge before you eat. Six Amir locations across Quebec were also fined $12,500 for food safety violations over the past year, so if you're a regular, it's worth knowing.

Have a good one, take care of yourselves out there, and I'll see you at the next one.
