Louis Morissette's François.e film sparks real conversation about understanding trans experience

Louis Morissette's new film François.e arrived without guarantee of success. The premise—a cynical male screenwriter checks the "trans" box on a grant application to fund a TV series, then must actually learn the reality he's claiming to represent—could have been a disaster. Trans communities had reason to be wary.

Instead, the film has landed as something more honest: a comedy-drama that doesn't moralize, but asks the audience to step into unfamiliar territory. Much of that grace comes from the involvement of two trans women—screenwriter Gabrielle Boulianne-Tremblay and actor Pascale Drevillon—whose presence and skill shaped the story into something that respects rather than exploits.

Morissette's character discovers he can't write intelligently about a world he doesn't know without real help and real listening. The film itself models that openness. It opens with a raw, full-frontal locker-room scene—a rare depiction of body diversity at the multiplex—and doesn't flinch from the messy reality of transition, but it also doesn't lecture.

For Morissette, the stakes are personal. He responded to hateful online comments with unusual vigour, and when asked why, he signalled something about his values. "We don't have to be all in agreement," he said, "just respect the reality of the other." But when the debate starts with "these are mentally ill," it gets him. The film is his answer: not a sermon, but an invitation to see differently.
