Michelle Good, a member of the Order of Canada, is among five finalists announced Monday for the Giller Prize, Canada's most endowed literary award in fiction.

Good is nominated for Eliza Sunshine, a multigenerational family saga following three generations of Cree women and the narrative tradition connecting them. The Cree author, lawyer and activist previously appeared on the longlist in 2020 for her novel Cinq petits Indiens.

The other finalists are Tara Gereaux for Wild People Quiet, which explores the repercussions of a woman hiding her Métis identity while living in a Prairie small town in the 1940s; Nazanine Hozar for The Small Ones, following children trapped in a military insurrection along the Iran-Iraq border in the early 1980s; Nicholas Herring for Your Breath in Charcoal; and Patmeena Sabit for Good People.

The Giller Prize awards the winner $100,000 and each finalist $10,000. A jury of nine independent booksellers representing five regions of Canada selected the finalists. The winner will be announced November 16 at a televised ceremony.
