Sophie Faucher, a flamboyant presence in Quebec theatre and television for four decades, died Tuesday in Montreal at 68, surrounded by family.

Faucher had battled cancer before, but the disease returned in early 2026. She withdrew from the stage production Le duplex in April, recognizing her declining health.

Born in Montreal on April 10, 1958, Faucher was a child of the performing arts—her mother was actress Françoise Faucher and her father was director Jean Faucher, both French artists who arrived in Quebec in 1951. She trained at the Conservatoire and launched her career at 20, tackling classical roles by Claudel, Marivaux, and Musset at venues like Rideau Vert and Théâtre Denise-Pelletier.

On television, she excelled in comedy, winning a Gémeaux in 2005 for her portrayal of the botoxed millionaire Crystale Bouvier-Montgomery in Le cœur a ses raisons alongside Marc Labrèche. She also voiced American films and appeared in numerous ads—most memorably as the angel on a cloud savoring Philadelphia cheese.

But Faucher's defining passion was Frida Kahlo. She collected art and artifacts devoted to the Mexican painter, created the 2013 solo show Frida Kahlo: correspondance based on the artist's intimate writings, and authored several children's books celebrating both Kahlo and opera singer Maria Callas.

When work dried up, she created her own—writing and sometimes directing plays including Apasionada and La Casa Azul. Offstage, friends described her as warmth itself, though her eyes would flood with tears when confronted with human suffering. "I'm like a sponge," she once said.

Faucher leaves behind a career of memorable roles and the legacy of an artist who never stopped reaching for beauty, even when the world turned difficult.
