Montreal theatre season opens tragicomic this fall with ancient texts and modern reimaginings

The 2026-2027 theatre season is announcing itself in tragicomedy and reinvention. Montreal's stages will host creations and adaptations of ancient texts alongside wholly contemporary takes on modern lives, opening a season that spans from the tragic cycles of the Atrides to the managed image of a pop icon.

At the Centre du Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui, Marie-Ève Milot directs an adaptation of Emmanuelle Pierrot's novel "La version qui n'intéresse personne" — which won the Prix des libraires du Québec in 2024. The story follows Sacha and Tom, two young people who flee to the Yukon seeking freedom, only to find their friendship turn violent and misogynist when one's love becomes serious. Marie-Claude St-Laurent adapted the novel for stage. The run starts September 15 and closes October 10, then travels to Quebec City's Trident from November 4 to 28.

At the TNM, director Alice Ronfard is mounting Aeschylus's "L'Orestie," a foundational text of Western theatre and democracy. Ronfard describes the work as spanning 25 centuries from ancient Greece to today — a human and political fresco exploring the long and painful passage from vengeance to justice through the Oresteia trilogy: "Agamemnon," "Les Choéphores," and "Les Euménides." She has assembled a plural and multigenerational cast of 32 interpreters, including 3 musicians: Violette Chauveau, Mireille Métellus, Francis Ducharme, and Monique Spaziani among them. The production runs September 22 to October 25 in Montreal, then travels to Ottawa's Théâtre français du CNA for November 5-7.

At Espace Go, director Sébastien David brings Marie-Hélène Larose-Truchon's "Enfin te voilà (Britney Spears)" to life. The play examines Britney Spears' life caught between public image and private experience marked by her father's long guardianship. Structured in 12 tableaux, the piece transforms Britney — played by Sophie Cadieux — into a mother, a correctional officer, the Virgin Mary, and other figures that evoke her oppressions. The ensemble includes one actor and five actresses, among them Marie-France Lambert and Dominique Quesnel, plus five dancers. Announced as a comedy, it runs September 22 to October 18.

These are among the season's lead productions — a turn toward interrogating power, freedom, and the cost of image that marks an ambitious fall for Montreal theatre.
