Pascale Marineau is mounting the stage this week with an energy forged through hardship.

The comedian and writer, who trained in theatre and studied at the École nationale de l'humour, initially struggled to find meaningful acting roles. "I noticed there were fewer and fewer roles and fewer auditions," she told Le Devoir. "And now they ask how many followers you have before inviting you to an audition. It's a major issue." Facing pressure to land sponsorship before agents would see her, she pivoted to improvisation and stand-up, where she could write and perform her own material in direct dialogue with audiences.

Starting Thursday, July 30, Marineau will host the Série Stand-up du festival Juste pour rire Québec, welcoming other comedians to the stage while managing the pacing and energy of the evening — a responsibility she views like hosting a baseball game. "We're on the same team, but we each take our turn at bat," she said. "If I hit a home run, I move everyone forward. But if I strike out, everyone pays the price. It's the responsibility of the host to create those conditions."

Her philosophy of resilience has been tested. Over recent years, Marineau survived seven cardiac arrests — the cause remains undetermined — and now carries a pacemaker. The experience has shifted her perspective. "Realizing that I'm very ephemeral in this big universe, that I have fragile health, and that I need to focus on the privilege of still being here — that I have the capacity to express myself, which is a miracle because I could have lost all my cognitive faculties — that brings flexibility and indulgence," she said.

This week, that hard-won grace takes the stage.
