Alchemist, the underground hip-hop producer credited with shaping modern rap, takes the stage at Club Soda on Tuesday as part of the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

While his commercial success remains modest, the Californian — born Alan Maman — stands apart from 1990s-era producers through relentless output, uncompromising sound quality, and refined, signature sonorities. He earned three Grammy nominations for contributions to Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III, Kendrick Lamar's Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, and his collaborative album Alfredo with Freddie Gibbs.

Alchemist got his start in 1991 with The Whooliganz, a duo with actor Scott Caan. He built his legend crafting beats for Mobb Deep, Ghostface Killah, Nas, Jadakiss, and Eminem, whom he toured with in the mid-2000s.

His signature sound emerged through relentless sampling — trawling record shops worldwide, he mines obscure vinyl across genres and eras. Nicholas Craven, Montreal's closest equivalent producer and a collaborator who first rose with Alchemist in 2013, calls him "one of the greatest virtuosos in hip-hop history" and "a visionary." That early partnership launched what Craven terms a "new era post-boom bap," where soul, jazz, and progressive rock infuse Alchemist's beats — some rhythmically thunderous, others delicately refined.

In Los Angeles, Alchemist has mentored a generation: Action Bronson, Curren$y, Earl Sweatshirt, Westside Gunn, Roc Marciano, Larry June, and Willie the Kid. He remains actively collaborating with most of them. The chemistry runs deep — friendships forged alongside shared artistry create rare creative partnerships.
