Just for Laughs season is upon Montreal. The comedy institution celebrates yet another year of laughs, jokes, and a diverse array of comedic talent on display at the festival that has launched many a lucrative career in the comedy industry.
This year's edition is headlined by the likes of "Weird" Al Yankovic, Nurse John, Atsuko Okatsuka and Gabriel Iglesias, among others, with plenty of shows worth catching beyond the marquee names.
The Culture Show, hosted by Dave Merheje, returns with another night focused on diversity and breaking cultural stereotypes through comedy. This self-proclaimed "cultural melting pot for comedy" features Alfred Robles, Jackie Fabulous, Keith Pedro and Tara Cannistraci — Latin-American, African-American, Filipino-Canadian and Italian-American respectively. It runs at Club Soda (1225 St-Laurent) from July 15–19 at 7 p.m., with tickets $58.75–$69.25.
The Nasty Show is for those seeking humour on the grittier, raunchier side. Hosted by Comedian CP, this year's edition features Ian Fidance, Maddy Smith, Marito Lopez and Rebecca Reeds delivering foul-mouthed swagger and shock value. It runs at Club Soda from July 15–19 and July 21 at 9:30 p.m. (except July 21, which starts at 7 p.m.), with tickets $54.75–$72.25.
Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody brings the Crave series to life as a staged theatrical reading. Six readings across three nights feature the hit Off-Broadway musical with erotic imagery for one's imagination to bring home. Studio St-Denis (1594 St-Denis) hosts the shows July 17 at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m., and July 18–19 at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with tickets $48–$68.
An Evening With David Letterman and special guest Will Arnett offers a fully unscripted chat at Place Des Arts. Letterman's former bandleader Paul Shaffer will also join the two. The show is July 21 at 7 p.m., with tickets $148–$550.
Brit(ish) features comedians from across the Atlantic with classic cross-the-pond dry wit. Mark Watson hosts this five-night event featuring Nabil Abdulrashid and Janine Harouni at Le Gesù (1200 Bleury) from July 21–25 at 7 p.m., with tickets $50.25–$57.25.
