A cyclist is in critical condition after a fall on Senkus Street in LaSalle early Saturday morning, with Montreal police investigating whether a medical event caused the crash.
The 40-year-old man was riding near the intersection with Cordner Street around 5:05 a.m. when he and a vehicle driver both braked to avoid a collision. Both parties continued on their way, but a few moments later, the cyclist fell to the ground sustaining serious upper-body injuries.
"The vehicle reportedly left the scene, and the cyclist continued on his way. It was only when he reached the next sidewalk that, for an unknown reason, the cyclist fell to the ground and sustained a serious upper-body injury," said Montreal police spokesperson Johany Charland.
The cyclist was transported to hospital unconscious but his life was no longer in danger a few hours after arrival. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether the cyclist experienced a medical emergency before the fall.
Senkus and Cordner is a neighbourhood that sees regular bike traffic, and the incident highlights the unpredictable dangers cyclists face on city streets—even when a collision is avoided.
