Laval reports sharp drop in gun violence and vehicle theft in 2025
Police data shows overall crime fell 11 percent last year, with significant declines in shootings, theft and crimes against people.
Laval Police reported significant drops across major crime categories in 2025, with overall crime declining 11 percent compared to the previous year.
Gun-related incidents fell sharply. Police recorded 16 cases involving gunfire in 2025, down from 25 in 2024. Vehicle thefts continued a downward trend, with all categories combined dropping 18 percent. Property crimes fell 8 percent while crimes against people decreased 6 percent.
Road safety also improved for the second consecutive year, with traffic accidents down 5 percent.
But the report released by Laval Police highlighted emerging challenges. Cases of extortion targeting businesses have risen, a trend observed across the greater Montreal area in recent years. The force also flagged growing demands related to mental health and homelessness. Officers responded to a record 3,293 calls involving individuals experiencing mental health issues in 2025—approximately 20 percent of all police interventions during the year.
The figures underscore the increasing role officers play in responding to social and mental health crises, in addition to traditional law enforcement duties. Police say the data reflects their ongoing efforts on crime prevention and community policing initiatives.
