Asking rents in Montreal have doubled since 2019, according to a new rent report by Rentals.ca, creating deepening affordability challenges for the city's renters.
The report finds that the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Montreal is now $2,312 — more than twice the asking rent in 2019 of $1,130, as measured by Statistics Canada. The average rent across all unit sizes in Montreal now sits at $1,968.
The finding comes against a backdrop of broader housing pressure: a Radio-Canada report uncovered that as many as 25,000 housing units sit vacant in Montreal. Just 16% of Quebecers approve of the Quebec government's job on housing affordability, according to recent polling.
