The Montreal Canadiens' playoff run ended Monday night with a 6-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final. The Habs were the last Canadian team standing in the NHL playoffs after the Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers fell in the first round.

The loss extends Canada's Stanley Cup drought to 33 years — the longest since a six-season gap from 1936 to 1941. The 1993 Canadiens remain the last Canadian team to win hockey's top prize. Carolina will face the winner of the Western Conference Final in the Stanley Cup championship series.

It's the first time in three seasons a Canadian team won't play in the Cup Final. The Edmonton Oilers lost to the Florida Panthers in the last two years.
