CAQ abandons Quebec constitution bill

The CAQ government has abandoned its controversial Quebec constitution bill as the National Assembly's spring session draws to a close.
Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette announced Thursday that he was dropping the wide-ranging bill after facing opposition in parliamentary committee from the Quebec Liberal Party and Québec Solidaire. The parliamentary committee scheduled to review remaining articles of the constitution was cancelled.
When asked why the government didn't impose a gag order to fast-track the legislation, Jolin-Barrette said the decision rested with House Leader François Bonnardel and Premier Christine Fréchette.
The withdrawal marks an end to one of the CAQ's marquee legislative ambitions, shelved rather than passed into law.
