The iconic Marconi name is coming home to Montreal. A military defence technology company with 123 years of local history announced Tuesday that it's coming under Canadian ownership and will rebrand as Marconi Technologies, honoring the Italian engineer who opened one of his first radio companies in the city.

The deal was orchestrated by a Canadian investor group led by Louis Vachon, the former CEO of National Bank. Until now, the company operated under UK and US ownership, a legacy of post-war corporate restructuring. The shift to Canadian control signals renewed confidence in Montreal's defence and technology sector—and in the strategic importance of keeping homegrown companies rooted here.

Marconi Technologies specializes in tactical communications equipment, the kind of tech that's increasingly critical as governments modernize military infrastructure. With the company now firmly under Canadian direction, Montreal retains control over a significant player in an industry that's growing rapidly. The rebrand carries symbolic weight too: it's a reclamation of a name tied to wireless innovation, now stewarded by Canadian hands.
