McGill University's Faculty of Arts union has voted overwhelmingly to authorize a five-day strike. Of 254 eligible members, 222 voted, and 86 percent approved the mandate on October 20.
The union represents professors with permanent or tenure-track positions, librarians, and contract academic staff. They are negotiating their first collective agreement — a process typically more complex than contract renewals because multiple new clauses must be negotiated from scratch rather than adjusted from existing terms.
The McGill administration said in a statement that it respects "the right of faculty members to organize as they choose, in accordance with Quebec labour law," and that the strike authorization "in no way alters our commitment to pursue negotiations constructively and in good faith."
No date has been set for when the union would exercise the strike mandate. The vote comes as other labour actions continue across Montréal: city professionals' unions struck evenings and weekends starting October 19.
