Montreal is overhauling its bike plan with a broad public consultation, starting Sunday, June 15. The last major revision was in 2019; a 2023 update was political but lacked public input.

Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada emphasized the shift: "We are putting in place the real consultation around the Plan Vélo." Alan DeSousa, the executive committee member responsible for mobility and infrastructure, said the new plan will be "developed with public input and will consider the differing transportation needs of neighbourhoods across Montreal."

A revised Plan Vélo is expected in 2027. The consultation runs on the Réalisons Montréal platform and will gather feedback from residents and community groups.

Cycling advocates stress the need for infrastructure beyond central neighborhoods. Mathieu Murphy-Perron, a founding member of Vélorution Montréal, noted that while central areas have reached critical mass for cycling commuters, "in other places there's nothing." Jean-François Rheault, CEO of Vélo Québec, said a strengthened plan could help more residents see cycling as a viable transportation option.

The new plan aims to make cycling safer and more accessible across the city, not just in established bike-friendly zones.
