Montreal-North's mayor is calling on residents who've experienced racial profiling, discrimination, or racist behaviour by police to come forward — a plea that comes as the city addresses serious allegations against officers at the borough's station.

On Friday, June 12, Montreal police dismantled the night patrol unit and removed 16 officers from patrol duties amid allegations of racial profiling and discrimination.

Mayor Christine Black acknowledged the revelations came as a shock, though concerns about systemic racism in Montreal-North are not new. "The scope of allegations reopened old wounds and raised legitimate questions about trust in public institutions," Black said.

The mayor emphasized that officials will need to find new ways to rebuild trust so victims feel comfortable reporting discrimination. Black's appeal signals the city recognizes the damage the allegations have caused in a neighbourhood that has long struggled with police relations.
