The Quebec Liberal Party is calling for an independent investigation into allegations of racism and discriminatory behavior at the Montreal Police Service (SPVM), arguing that allowing the police force to investigate itself would not meet public expectations for transparency.

On Friday, SPVM chief Fady Dagher announced that two officers from Precinct 39 had been suspended following allegations of racist behavior toward Montréal-Nord residents. Those officers could face criminal charges under review by the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions. Fourteen other officers from the same station were transferred or reassigned to duties without public contact.

Liberal MNAs Jennifer Maccarone and Madwa-Nika Cadet urged the government to entrust the investigation to the Sûreté du Québec rather than the SPVM. "The public needs assurance that a truly independent and impartial investigation will be conducted," said Cadet, MNA for Bourassa-Sauvé. "This is an essential condition for demonstrating our zero-tolerance stance toward racism and for ensuring that all citizens feel respected and safe."

Dagher indicated the SPVM's investigation is ongoing. Minister of Internal Security Ian Lafrenière said he is following the case closely and will ensure "everything is put in place to shed light on the events."
