Quebec's election campaign officially begins October 5, when Premier Christine Fréchette meets with Lieutenant Governor Manon Jeannotte to dissolve the National Assembly.
The 39-day campaign will pit Fréchette's Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) against the Liberal Party of Quebec led by Charles Milliard, Québec solidaire led by Ruba Ghazal, and the Parti Québécois under Paul St-Pierre Plamondon. The Conservatives' Éric Duhaime is also on the ballot.
Heading into dissolution, the CAQ holds 79 seats, compared to 18 for the Liberals, 11 for Québec solidaire, seven for the PQ, one for the Conservatives, and nine independent members. Fréchette took over the CAQ leadership a few months ago after François Legault stepped down.
Both the Liberals and Québec solidaire have already announced their campaign launches for Thursday in their respective strongholds—Quebec City and Montreal.
