Forty-one per cent of Quebecers now rank food affordability among the country's top three issues, up 15 points in a single year, according to a Salvation Army survey of more than 1,500 Canadians. One in four Quebecers says they skip or cut back on meals because they cannot afford groceries.

About 15 per cent of Quebecers turned to community food supports in 2026, and 58 per cent report difficulty managing limited financial resources. The findings come from the Salvation Army's 2026 Canadian Poverty and Socioeconomic Analysis.

Housing is the other pressure point. About 16 per cent of Quebecers spend at least half of their after-tax household income on housing, compared with 24 per cent nationally. Wendy Woodland, divisional secretary for public relations at the Salvation Army's Atlantic Division, said the cost of living is now about "making difficult choices between groceries, housing and other basic necessities."

The Salvation Army says it will keep supporting families facing economic uncertainty and has invited others to join its efforts.
