Jean-Luc Mongrain, one of Quebec's most recognizable media figures, died October 11 at age 75 from complications of cancer. His son confirmed the death.

Mongrain built a career spanning more than 50 years across radio, television and digital media. He hosted "Mongrain de sel," a public affairs program; "Le grand journal," a news bulletin on TQS (now Noovo) for nine years; and a daily show called "Mongrain" on LCN for three years. In 2015, Mongrain produced and directed the documentary "Guilty or Sick," examining cases involving the not criminally responsible verdict and mental disorder. In 2021, he launched "Mongrain en balado," a ten-episode podcast in which he interviewed Quebec personalities on social issues including medical assistance in dying and relations with First Nations.

Mongrain received 18 Artis Awards, including Best News and Public Affairs Host. He served as ambassador for the Quebec Breakfast Club and led its annual fundraising campaign, "Tasse de Jean-Luc Mongrain."

Premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon described Mongrain as a "unique and colourful character" who "was not a journalist like the others." He added: "One of the things that will be remembered for a long time is the healthy anger he could have had on screen."

Outgoing Premier Christine Fréchette said: "Jean-Luc Mongrain will have marked generations of Quebecers with his passion, his colourful personality and his very own way of commenting on current events." Quebec Liberal Party leader Charles Milliard called Mongrain "a key figure in the Quebec media world" who "was able not only to listen, but also to give a voice to Quebecers."

Québec solidaire spokeswoman Ruba Ghazal said: "Part of her youth on television was leaving with Mongrain's death."
