Sun Youth distributes 1,250 backpacks to Montreal students as back-to-school costs rise

Sun Youth, the Montreal organization that operates a food bank and youth services, distributed more than 1,250 school backpacks to families this year—a significant increase from its typical 1,000—as demand for back-to-school support continues to grow.

The Big Back-to-School Party took place at Sun Youth's gymnasium at 7501 Saint-Laurent Boulevard, where 800 children picked up backpacks filled with school supplies and participated in face painting, games, snacks, and circus activities. The remaining 450 backpacks will be distributed through community partners, including partner schools, youth supported by PRAIDA, and families served by La Maison Bleue.

"Getting a backpack full of supplies can cost well over a hundred dollars," said Marina Boulos-Winton, Sun Youth's executive director. "They're starting the school year on the right foot. They have everything that they need to start the school year."

For the families who attended, the giveaway addressed a real financial squeeze. One parent said the backpack program helped her save significantly as she prepared for back-to-school costs. "That helped me to prepare for back to school," she said, adding that her children were thrilled with their new bags. The same family also uses Sun Youth's food bank—a combination of support that eases pressure on already stretched household budgets.

Sun Youth's work extends beyond backpacks. The organization offers 11 different sports programs, including basketball, tennis, football and ice hockey, and provides uniforms and equipment. Food bank clients can access children's activities at a 90-per-cent discount. Guinness Rider, director of community services and sports, said those programs are essential for keeping children active and connected. "It's very important for these families and these kids to have access to physical activity, social activity," Rider said. "All of our programs are built on education, mental health, and safety."

Many families who come through Sun Youth's doors are newcomers to Montreal, making the organization a point of connection as they settle into the city.
