Things to do in Montréal this week: September 20–26

This is a cool, overcast week — most days will hover between 6 and 20°C with cloud cover — but Wednesday clears beautifully for a few hours before the clouds roll back in. It's the kind of stretch that keeps you indoors for shows but rewards a midweek walk. The real draw is a master class in classical piano and a handful of solid live performances scattered across town.

Lang Lang, the celebrated Chinese pianist, plays Place des Arts on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. His reputation precedes him — he has performed with major orchestras around the world and appeared at many of the planet's leading concert halls. This is the kind of show that fills the room with serious listeners and rewards the investment of a ticket. Wednesday's clear spell means you can walk the Quartier des Spectacles without the usual damp before heading inside.

If heavy music is your line, HammerFall takes Café Campus on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The Swedish power metal band, formed in 1993 by ex-Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oscar Dronjak, has built a loyal following across decades. It is a full-throttle, unapologetic show for the crowd that wants it loud and fast.

Also on Sunday: Bear Ghost, a Phoenix rock and progressive rock outfit, plays Piranha Bar at noon — an early start, but the overcast morning suits an indoor set. Later that same day, if you want to venture to Brossard (about 12 km south of downtown), Claude Dubois, a Canadian singer-songwriter, performs at Théâtre Manuvie at 4 p.m. The South Shore is a manageable drive for a Sunday matinee if you want to catch him.

Wednesday brings another option: Abdelkader Secteur performs at L'Olympia at 7:30 p.m. with a show titled Montréal, je suis revenu!. It is the kind of local character moment the city specializes in.

Beyond the stages, Friday night offers Jeremy Demay at Théâtre St. Denis at 8 p.m. for comedy. If you want a proper dinner before or after a show this week, Tiramisu Saint-Laurent in Mile End serves straightforward Italian in a neighborhood known for its food scene — warm and unpretentious, the kind of place that feels right on a cool evening. Maggie Oakes, over on the other side, is a solid grill spot if you want something more polished. Either works as a pre-show ritual before heading to Place des Arts or downtown.

The week is short on spectacle but long on quality. If you have one night to spend, spend it at Place des Arts on Wednesday when the weather breaks and Lang Lang is in the house. That is the moment the city feels alert and alive.
