Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Tuesday that Canada will impose new sanctions against Russia as its war in Ukraine continues, following a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit.

The sanctions package targets 162 individuals, entities, and vessels tied to Russia's war machine, including measures against the country's shadow fleet, energy revenues, defence-industrial operations, and disinformation actors.

Canada coordinated the move with allies Norway, France, Australia, and the United Kingdom. "Canada continues to oppose the expansion of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem," Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand posted on social media. "We remain committed to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace where Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace and security."

The announcement comes as Canada has already stepped up its military support. Last month, Carney announced Canada will contribute an additional $270 million to help Ukraine secure critical military capabilities in its defence against Russia's full-scale invasion. The commitment was made during a meeting with world leaders at the European Political Community summit in Armenia.
