The payment targets a real barrier: applying for the Disability Tax Credit requires a medical practitioner to certify a severe or prolonged impairment. While the service is free in some cases, others must pay medical practitioners $125 to $150, plus transportation costs. The disability community has flagged these upfront expenses as significant financial barriers to accessing the benefit program.
To be eligible, Canadians must have a DTC certificate from the Canada Revenue Agency entitling them to receive the CDB. The eligibility applies retroactively—anyone who received disability payments before September 1 qualifies for the $150 supplement. No separate application is needed; payments will go out automatically in September.
To qualify for the CDB itself, recipients must be 18 to 64 years old, approved for the DTC, a Canadian resident or permanent resident, and have filed a 2025 federal income tax return along with their spouse or common-law partner, if applicable. Those eligible received their previous payment on August 20, with the next payment scheduled for September 17. The maximum monthly CDB benefit is $204.20.
The Disability Tax Credit reduces income tax paid by Canadians with disabilities or their supporting family members, meant to help offset costs related to the impairment. The federal government has not disclosed how many Canadians will receive the $150 supplement.
