Canadians From Gaza Flotilla Returning Home After Israeli Detention

Nine of the 12 Canadians detained by Israeli forces during a Gaza aid flotilla are expected to arrive in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver this weekend, according to the flotilla's organizing body, Global Sumud Flotilla.

The Canadians were among 420 activists on 41 boats intercepted by Israel as they attempted to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza. They were detained for several days before being transferred to Turkey, where they received urgent medical care.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said the Canadians suffered "appalling abuse" while in Israeli custody. The detainees' accounts documented alleged mistreatment that contradicted Israeli prison officials' denials of abuse.

Israel's national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, published video of himself taunting the detained activists while they knelt with their faces to the ground and hands bound—a gesture that sparked international criticism.

Global Affairs Canada summoned Israel's ambassador to Canada and condemned the "mistreatment of civilians," demanding accountability for those responsible. Of the three remaining Canadians from the flotilla, one is still in Turkey and two are en route to other destinations.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions over Israel's naval blockade of Gaza and the humanitarian situation in the territory. For Toronto's activist and Palestinian-Canadian communities, the return of the detainees will likely reignite debate about Canada's relationship with Israel and the limits of solidarity activism.
