Germany defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 on Saturday, June 20, at BMO Field and clinched a spot in the World Cup knockout phase.

Substitute Deniz Undav scored both German goals after coming on in the second half at the 68th minute. His second goal came four minutes into stoppage time when he received a pass from Felix Nmecha in front of the net and rifled it past Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana.

Undav's first goal came after Nadiem Amiri sent in a long ball that striker Kai Havertz let pass by. Both Amiri and Undav had subbed on eight minutes before the first goal.

The win marks a comeback for four-time World Cup champion Germany, which suffered disappointing group stage exits in 2018 and 2022. Ivory Coast remains searching for its first knockout stage appearance but could still qualify depending on other group results.

Thousands of German supporters filled BMO Field for the match. German fans marched through Toronto's waterfront ahead of kickoff, waving flags and chanting the team's anthem. Among the crowd were international visitors and longtime Toronto residents who came to watch their country play.
