Telus is upgrading 5G data speeds for Koodo customers across the board, boosting the cap from 250Mbps to 1Gbps on all plans at no extra cost.

New Koodo customers will see the faster speeds immediately on any compatible 5G phone with up-to-date software. Existing customers are also getting the upgrade automatically, but Koodo expects the change will "be completed over the next six months," meaning a potentially long wait for some users.

The upgrade comes weeks after Rogers-owned Fido and Bell-owned Virgin Plus made similar moves with their own flanker brands, matching speeds at 1Gbps. Koodo had lagged behind with a previous cap of 250Mbps, so the change brings the three flanker brands back on equal footing.

It's worth noting that actual speeds depend on several factors beyond the network's capability — device compatibility, proximity to towers, and environmental conditions all play a role. Koodo also removed a previous 5G speed boost perk that upped data to 500Mbps, though customers can still select other perks like rollover data.

For Edmonton residents on Koodo, the upgrade is automatic and free whenever your turn comes in the rollout queue.
