Retailers are rolling out AI agents that can make purchases on your behalf — no cart confirmation needed — and the tech industry is betting you'll trust them with your credit card.

Google, Amazon, and Robinhood have all launched or announced features allowing AI agents to automatically buy products when prices drop, stocks meet criteria, or other preset conditions are met. Google's Gemini Spark, launching in the U.S. in coming months, will let AI-driven tools make purchases when specific brand or price conditions are met.

The pitch sounds frictionless: let the bot handle the shopping. But security and control remain major hurdles. Agentic checkout is far more complex than product search — split shipping, buy-now-pay-later options, age-verified products, and CAPTCHA obstacles all trip up current AI systems.

"Anything from split shipping to buy now pay later, installments, validations, even how will my agent navigate an ID requirement — these are all tricky," said Victoria Duggan, senior product manager at Shopify.

Cybersecurity analyst Ritesh Kotak warned of vulnerabilities. "There has to be a balance between making your life easier versus you losing control of what is in your bank account," said Shenela Tavarayan, group product manager of merchant solutions at Interac. Malicious actors could manipulate bots into buying from unencrypted sites or fraudulent vendors, and without strict guardrails, a single mistake could drain accounts.

Google frames the feature as "like giving a teenager their first debit card" — with limits and constraints. Whether consumers actually feel that safe is the real test.
