York–Simcoe seat vacant after Caroline Mulroney resigns

The York–Simcoe provincial seat is now vacant after Progressive Conservative MPP Caroline Mulroney stepped down, Elections Ontario confirmed Friday.
Mulroney, first elected in 2018, served in multiple cabinet portfolios under Premier Doug Ford before announcing her resignation to spend more time with family. According to provincial law, a byelection must be called by December 2 at the latest. The earliest voting day is July 9; the latest is December 31.
York–Simcoe encompasses Bradford West Gwillimbury, East Gwillimbury, Keswick, and Georgina. Ford has not publicly indicated when he will call the byelection.
This is not the only vacancy at Queen's Park. A separate byelection in Scarborough Southwest is expected later this year after former Ontario NDP MPP Doly Begum resigned to run federally for the Liberal Party of Canada in the same riding. Begum was elected to the House of Commons in April.
