Monday cool-down: indie night and a week of shifts ahead

Morning. It's 11°C out there—pull a layer if you're heading out early, and remember you've got less than 12 hours of daylight left today. Mostly cloudy overhead, UV's mild at 3.0, so no sunburn drama. By tonight the sun drops at 6:36, so plan indoor stuff accordingly.

On the commute front, nothing major reported this morning. Just the usual heads-up: traffic deaths are climbing in the 613 this year—we're at 26 already—so if you're driving, keep your eyes sharp around pedestrians and watch for motorcyclists. Weather like this can catch riders off guard.

Couple of things worth knowing as the week kicks off. The festival crowd's been squeezed hard by unpredictable permit costs and delays—if you've got events you care about coming up this fall or next, the organizers are feeling real pressure. And if you've got a soft spot for some of the older spots around town, Nutty Greek Bake Shop on Preston just closed after 15 years; Ek Bar's heading out by month-end too. The restaurant shuffle keeps moving.

On the brighter side, there's fresh energy in the Market: Ruby's just opened with elegant small plates and a serious wine list if that's your scene. And Ottawa's own Yannick La Salle just advanced to the 2027 Canadian Culinary Championship, so that's a nice local win.

If you're hungry at lunch and craving something different, this is a good week to explore a new spot. The Market's worth a walk.

Tonight's got two solid plays if you want to get out of your head. Metric and Broken Social Scene are playing The Arena at TD Place at 7:00—proper indie rock energy to shake off a Monday. If that's not your lane, there's also a free screening of Scary Movie at Algonquin Commons Theatre, same time. Both indoor, both worth the trip. The weather's cool enough that you won't overheat getting there.

This week's got more happening—comedy, cirque, folk shows if you're planning ahead—but lean on tonight to reset. Monday's got a different energy when you've got something to do.

Stay sharp out there. See you tonight.
